What is an over - fortified earthquake?

An earthquake beyond the fortification level refers to an earthquake whose actual seismic intensity exceeds the local fortification standard.

Tangshan earthquake, Wenchuan earthquake, Yushu earthquake, Ya'an earthquake and other well-known earthquakes in China are all over fortified earthquakes. Take Wenchuan as an example: Before the Wenchuan earthquake, the fortification was 7 degrees equivalent to a magnitude 5 earthquake at the epicenter, while a magnitude 8 earthquake with a destructive degree of 11 degrees occurred. Each magnitude difference is about 31.6 times, which means that the earthquake energy level acting on Wenchuan is more than 30000 times that of our fortification!

There are countless examples:

On July 28, 1976, Tangshan, Hebei Province, was a positive 6 degree fortification area - an earthquake with intensity of 11 occurred (no major earthquake in history)

On May 12, 2008, the fortification area of Sichuan Wenchuan was 7 degrees - an earthquake of 11 degrees occurred

On April 14, 2010, Qinghai Yushu earthquake fortification area of magnitude 7 occurred an earthquake of magnitude 11

April 20, 2013 Sichuan Ya'an earthquake fortification area of magnitude 7 - an earthquake of magnitude 9 occurred

……

The following are the earthquake cases in Yunnan Province

2011.03.10 Yingjiang 7 degree fortification area in Yunnan Province - an earthquake with intensity of 8 occurred

On September 7, 2012, a 7-degree fortification area in Yiliang, Yunnan Province - an earthquake with intensity of 8 occurred

2013.08.31 Yunnan Shangri La 7 degree fortified area - earthquake with intensity of 8

August 3, 2014, Ludian 7 degree fortification area in Yunnan Province - an earthquake with intensity of 9-10 degree occurred

On October 7, 2014, Jinggu 7 fortification area in Yunnan Province - an earthquake with intensity of 8 occurred

……

Because the seismic safety margin is insufficient, the seismic effect of traditional buildings built according to the fortification standards is relatively pale in the case of over fortification earthquakes.
